Join us on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. to celebrate Ohio’s north coast along Lake Erie’s shore with selected poetry readings at the Wick Poetry Center of Kent State University.
The Edith Chase Lecture
At 7 p.m. Dr. Scudder Mackey, Chief of the Office of Coastal Management for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will present “Edith’s Passion: The Evolution of Coastal Management in Lake Erie – Challenges and Opportunities” at Kent State’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Dr. Mackey will guide us through strategies used in Ohio to provide for long-term use and enjoyment of Lake Erie. (Doors open at 6:30 PM)

Our Symposium Speaker
Dr. Scudder Mackey, is currently the Chief of the Office of Coastal Management with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Office of Coastal Management coordinates coastal resource protection and management activities within the Ohio Lake Erie coastal region and works collaboratively with numerous State and Federal agencies to protect coastal infrastructure, restore natural coastal processes and ecosystems, and promote sustainable economic development.
Dr. Mackey holds a Doctorate in Geology with interests in coastal change mapping and analysis; Great Lakes water level variability; aquatic habitat characterization and mapping; nearshore, coastal, and riverine processes; coastal wetland habitat restoration; beneficial use of dredge material; and application of Landscape Conservation Design principles to Great Lakes coastal systems.
Previously, Dr. Mackey owned and managed Habitat Solutions NA an environmental consulting firm based in Chicago. He served as ODNR manager of the Lake Erie Geology Group from 1992 to 2001. He previously worked for the Great Lakes Governors as the Project Implementation Manager for the Great Lakes Protection Fund in Evanston, Illinois.
Dr. Mackey currently holds a dual appointment as an Adjunct and Visiting Research Professor in Biological Sciences and Earth Sciences at the University of Windsor, Ontario Canada.
